Feel the Burn … with High Intensity Interval Training!

Man exercising intenselyHigh Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has become one of the hottest workout trends — and for good reason! Compared to the slow and steady workout methods of the past, HIIT gets your entire body moving, which in turn burns fat faster. During a HIIT workout, you will do rapid, powerful surges of exercise, followed by recovery periods. For example, you may run as fast as you can for a minute, elevating your heartrate, and then walk for another minute or so, giving you a bit of recovery time while keeping your heart pumping. With HIIT, you burn fat more quickly and exercise your body more effectively.

Traditionally, HIIT was used only in intense workout programs for athletes and body builders, but because of its effectiveness, HIIT exercise routines have made their way to the general public.

HIIT training has taken off because of its time-saving factor. With a slow and steady cardio workout, you could spend 40 minutes to an hour on the elliptical machine or treadmill. You can do the same level of workout and see the same, if not better results, in dramatically reduced time by using the HIIT method. In fact, one study found than 2.5 hours of interval training produced the same results as 10.5 hours of traditional endurance workouts.1

High intensity workouts are known to increase your resting metabolism rate, so not only do you burn fat while training, you also burn fat even after you’ve finished working out. The after-burn, or your EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), the rate at which your body rebuilds its oxygen resources following vigorous movement such as a high intensity workout, is elevated with HIIT workouts. After performing such exercises, fat stores in your body are broken down and turned into Free Fatty Acids (FFAs), or in other words, fuel for your body to recover and re-oxidize itself after a big workout. The FFAs are released into your bloodstream and are picked up in an effort to reenergize you post workout. Studies have shown that HIIT workouts are twice as effective at stimulating the EPOC system, meaning you are getting double the bang for your buck with a high intensity workout compared to a standard slow and steady excercise.2

When HIIT workouts are implemented correctly, you’ll not only burn more fat while working out you’ll do so post-workout too. When fat stores are burned off, people are at a much lower risk for diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease. And to top it off, HIIT workouts take less time — it’s no wonder they’ve become so popular!
